Telespazio Leads STEM Education Initiatives in the Abruzzo Region

09 January 2025

Signed a partnership with the University of L'Aquila and unveiled the "Space Camp - From Classrooms to the Stars" project, developed with Italiacamp

Today, at Telespazio’s Fucino Space Center two significant initiatives aimed at boosting STEM education for students in the Abruzzo region were presented.

Telespazio and the University of L'Aquila have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to offer students new opportunities for higher education at all levels (bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees), helping them acquire the specific skills needed for careers in the space industry. This agreement further strengthens the already successful collaboration between the University and companies within the Leonardo Group.

Additionally, the “Space Camp – Dai Banchi alle Stelle” project was introduced. This initiative, selected and supported by the Fondo per la Repubblica Digitale Impresa Sociale under the Polaris call promoted by the Italiacamp Association, involves Telespazio as the for-profit partner in a broader collaboration that includes three high schools in Abruzzo and the Innovalley Association – Promoters of Innovation.

The project will engage 200 students from Abruzzo, offering them training and guidance to pursue STEM studies and careers. Some of these students will participate in an Honors Program hosted by Telespazio at the Fucino Space Center.

For Telespazio, education is a strategic priority in integrating young talent, both graduates and non-graduates, into the ever-growing and innovative space sector. Focusing on the Abruzzo region, the company is dedicated to developing STEM skills and preparing young people to meet the current and future needs of the job market.

The event was attended by Edoardo Alesse, Rector of the University of L'Aquila, Luigi Mazza, General Director of Italiacamp Association, and principals from local high schools. Representing Telespazio were Maurizio Betta, Head of People & Organization, Gianni Riccobono, Head of the Fucino Space Center, and Stefano Beco, Head of National and European Funded Programmes.

“In a fast-paced technological world where the job market is constantly evolving, it’s crucial to develop and strengthen new models of collaboration between businesses and the national education system. Telespazio is committed to promoting STEM education initiatives and is delighted to deepen our partnership with the University of L'Aquila while supporting a project like Space Camp – Dai Banchi alle Stelle. Today, one of the most pressing challenges is the skills mismatch— the gap between the specialized skills companies need and what young people entering the workforce possess. That’s why initiatives that help students navigate their educational choices are so important.”

Maurizio Betta, Head of People & Organization at Telespazio.
