The Italian Ministry for the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has provided over two million Euro of funding for the creation of a Centre for the management of climate emergencies in Saint Lucia (an eastern Caribbean island), which was built with e-GEOS and is currently operational.
The initiative is part of the “Geo-Information Centre (GIC) in Saint Lucia” project, which has allowed the creation of an Early Warning System. This is essential for the management of the climate emergencies that frequently affect this island in the Caribbean.
The system can, in a few hours, provide satellite maps of before and after the event, with global coverage, to support rescue operations after catastrophic climate events.
The Geo-Information Centre (GIC), developed by e-GEOS, integrates the technology of the Italian COSMO-SkyMed satellite constellation, the data generated by meteorological radars, hydraulic models and the company’s capacity in a strategic sector, emergency mapping.
The new Centre, managed by the Saint Lucia Meteorological Services (SLUMET) will increase and improve the warning systems of local authorities should extreme climate events be imminent, in order to protect people and infrastructure, providing a rapid assessment of the damage, before and after the event.
