Telespazio: COPASIR's visit to the Fucino Space Centre confirms its strategic role for national security

25 September 2024

Satellite communications, navigation, positioning and Earth observation services play a fundamental role in national security and confirm Telespazio’s important role and the company’s commitment to supporting sectors that are strategic for Italy's security.

This is what emerged today after the delegation of the Parliamentary Committee for the Security of the Republic (COPASIR) visited Telespazio’s Fucino Space Centre, one of the most advanced space infrastructures in the world.

The visiting party included the President of COPASIR, Lorenzo Guerini, with other important representatives such as Enrico Borghi, Claudio Borghi, Ester Mieli, Licia Ronzulli, Roberto Scarpinato and Marco Pellegrini.

Leonardo's top executives, the Chairman Stefano Pontecorvo and the Managing Director of the Space Business Unit, Massimo Comparini, were also present. CEO Gabriele Pieralli attended the meeting for Telespazio.

The “Piero Fanti” Space Centre in the Fucino plain, in the province of L'Aquila (central Italy), has been active since 1963. Today, with its 170 antennas on a 370,000 square meter area, it is recognised as one of the most important satellite teleport in the world for civil uses. In-orbit control of satellites, telecommunications, television and multimedia services are among the activities executed in the Space Centre, which also includes the Control Centre of the Italian Earth observation’s satellite constellation COSMO-SkyMed, and one of the Control Centres that manage Galileo, the European navigation satellite system.
