Telespazio will supply a satellite communication system for MOSE

11 July 2023

Satellite technology is now fully part of the telecommunications systems of the MOSE in Venice. The consortium’s Extraordinary Commissioner, Elisabetta Spitz, has signed an agreement with Telespazio, which will allow the lagoon inlet stations to activate communications while MOSE is operational, starting from September and for the next 24 months.

The aim of this step is to fine-tune the MOSE connectivity system, which is currently guaranteed by the radio bridge established by the Italian Army and delivered to the Consorzio Venezia Nuova in March this year.

The MOSE telecommunications system is an essential brick in the works because it allows the connection and synchronisation of the barriers’ automation systems.

It will be redundant: the satellite technology will work alongside the radio bridge, which has contributed 50 times to raising the MOSE to protect Venice and its lagoon.

The telecommunications system provided by Telespazio will consist of three satellite terminals, installed in the lagoon inlet stations in Porto di Lido, Malamocco and Chioggia, which will transmit to geostationary satellites. To check the system is functioning correctly at all times, another monitoring and supervising network will be created with communication technologies that rely on low-orbit satellites.

“MOSE is a major Italian infrastructure project and we feel honoured to be asked to support it. This new contract shows yet again how our company can propose and test complex and reliable satellite solutions, which can guarantee that the communication systems of critical infrastructure are working correctly.”

Alessandro Caranci, Senior Vice President Satellite Communications at Telespazio
