Space Walks, the Rai4 programme dedicated to Space, is now broadcasting!

24 November 2021

Space Walks, the first programme dedicated to Space and to Space Economy, will be making its late evening début on Rai4 on Wednesday, 24th November - and streaming on RaiPlay and Rai Italia. In the first episode, Telespazio opens the doors to its Fucino Space Centre.

Space Walks is a programme by Marco Falorni and Andrea Frassoni written together with Emilio Cozzi. Over the four episodes of this first season, the journalist and science communicator Emilio Cozzi will accompany us in the discovery of everything to do with space: from the design of new rockets and satellites to missions to the Moon and Mars - both past and present; from the remote sensing of the Earth for the prevention of natural disasters to interviews with the most famous Italian astronauts like Samantha Cristoforetti and Luca Parmitano.

The focus of this evening’s first episode (24th November) lies on the Moon, the destination of multiple missions in the coming years, both robotic and manned, with the aim of creating a more stable and sustainable human presence.

During the programme, Marco Brancati, CTIO of Telespazio, will illustrate the technologies and innovations which will allow us to reach and inhabit our natural satellite. He will also explain the company’s role in Moonlight, the ESA (European Space Agency)’s programme for the development of a constellation capable of providing telecommunications and positioning services on the Moon as well.

Telespazio and e-GEOS will also be on the programme next week, in the episode broadcast on 1st December dedicated to the remote sensing of the Earth and to the role of satellites in managing emergencies and fighting Climate Change.

Lucia Luzietti, who heads up the Emergency team, and Filippo Britti, head of SAR applications at e-GEOS will in fact illustrate the importance of the European satellite constellation Copernicus, and of the Italian COSMO-SkyMed, and their vital mission to monitor the changes under way on Earth from Space.

Space Walks will be produced with the support of Telespazio and e-GEOS in partnership with the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency.

Coming up with an innovative idea may be easy, but putting it into practice can be anything but - especially if the required technologies have not been tested before and there is no closely-knit team to work with. This is the spirit of ORiS, the team of students from the Politecnico di Torino (POLITO) university, who, last year, won the opportunity through #T-TeC 2022 to create a Proof of Concept (PoC) for their ambitious project: to build a satellite infrastructure that provides energy to the Moon directly from space.
