The Leonardo Group brings its excellence and innovation in Earth Observation to Australia

24 September 2025

Leonardo, through e-GEOS, will introduce its high value-added Earth Observation solutions to the Australian and Indo-Pacific markets. The adoption of the most advanced geospatial technologies in the region will contribute to strengthening national resilience, environmental monitoring and digital transformation processes.

Leonardo already has a well-established presence and has been providing cutting-edge technological solutions in Australia since 1985. Today, it plays a key role in the Australian defence industry, supported by constant investment and the strengthening of its industrial presence with operational sites in Melbourne, Perth and Nowra.

To support the expansion of its Earth Observation solutions offering, the Leonardo Group, through its subsidiary Leonardo Australia, has acquired new expertise dedicated to promoting these capabilities in the region. This will allow for a targeted approach to addressing the region's priorities, particularly in the areas of natural emergency management, sustainable development, critical infrastructure monitoring and national security.

“We are proud to strengthen Leonardo Group’s presence in geospatial services in an innovative and relevant market such as the Indo-Pacific. Our Earth Observation solutions offer cutting-edge technologies to support national needs and address environmental and land management challenges in the region. Our direct footprint in the region will provide us with the best opportunity to collaborate with local institutions and partners to develop new applications that leverage the most advanced satellite data to meet those needs. This step represents not only our entry into a new market, but also a lasting commitment to leveraging our capabilities to generate tangible value for citizens and communities worldwide."

Milena Lerario, CEO of e-GEOS.

"Earth Observation is an area of excellence for Italy in terms of technology, sensors and services. This domain is one of the most important in the Group's strategic plan for Space activities, as highlighted by the significant investment in a proprietary multi-sensor Earth Observation constellation, whose first services will be operational as early as 2028, and by investments in digital technologies to provide advanced services through advanced algorithms, data fusion and artificial intelligence."

Massimo Claudio Comparini, Managing Director of Leonardo's Space Division.

e-GEOS and Leonardo Australia will undertake a series of initiatives in 2025 as part of the Space Division's roadmap, collaborating with key authorities and research institutions, Australian SMEs and companies, universities and indigenous organisations to jointly develop innovative Earth Observation applications. They will also attend upcoming forums in the space and defence sectors with the aim of strengthening relations and developing tailor-made services for Australia and the Pacific region.
