Telespazio and Viesgo join forces for a space-based solution for early fire detection

29 April 2021

Telespazio Ibérica will provide Viesgo, a key player in Spain's energy transition and the fourth largest electricity distributor in the Country, with a space-based solution for early fire detection for its high and medium voltage distribution network.

The project, in which e-GEOS, Satlantis and Ferchau are also involved, covers the entire life cycle of the solution, from design and validation to support and maintenance.

The innovative solution provided by Telespazio Ibérica will offer early fire detection services for Viesgo’s network of more than 31,000 km in the northwest of Spain.

The solution is based on ESRI's ArcGIS technology and will use data from NASA’s satellite to generate alerts to detect active fire outbreaks, providing information on the most accessible routes to them by sending alerts 24 hours a day, automatically and continuously. In addition, it will support the management of preventive measures against fires in maintenance tasks on distribution lines, providing information about the risk of fire in the area of interest.

Fires are a serious environmental, economic, and social problem that generates constant alarm in Spain, and it is necessary to control their extent, frequency and intensity.

The million hectares that have been devastated in the country in the last decade have caused significant social damage, ecological effects, alterations in the hydrological cycle and a clear economic drain.

Spain, like other countries in the Mediterranean region, is particularly vulnerable to climate change, given the scenario of droughts and desertification in which it finds itself.

For this reason, the project will bring benefits not only to the networks and electricity supply, but also to the environment and its biodiversity, a fundamental objective of Viesgo's plan, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations in its 2030 agenda.

Both companies Viesgo and Telespazio have integrated innovation and sustainability into their business processes and seek to jointly promote the construction of a sustainable world for all, offering significant and innovative technological solutions that are committed to a better future.

"There is a lot of work to be done in the field of fire prevention and warning, but this type of solution shows us that we are on the right track, collaborating in the preservation of the environment through a technology that can be scaled to an infinite number of projects"

Carlos Hernández Medel, Commercial Director of Telespazio Ibérica.
