The innovative Telespazio service to provide real-time data to EUMETSAT

26 May 2023

Telespazio provides EUMETSAT with the EUMETCast Europe service, an innovative satellite communication system for the real-time transmission of updated weather data to the meteorological offices of different countries.

Also thanks to the collaboration with the French company ENENSYS Technologies, Telespazio’s solution for EUMETCast Europe represents state-of-the-art satellite communication technology.

In addition to being compatible with the receivers that users are currently working with, it guarantees a high level of availability of meteorological data, partly thanks to the redundancy of Telespazio’s land-based and satellite infrastructure.

The service debuted officially this year on 14 February, using the infrastructure of the Fucino and Lario Space Centres in Italy.

Telespazio is constantly working to develop new advanced solutions that provide benefits in terms of reliability, availability and cost reduction. The integration of Enensys technology for the supply of the EUMETCast Europe service meets these needs, in an increasingly global and competitive satellite market.

“Innovation and reliability have been Telespazio’s trademarks for over sixty years. The collaboration with ENENSYS confirms this approach and allows us to provide EUMETSAT with a network able to support a service that contributes to improving and safeguarding the daily life of European citizens.”

Alessandro Caranci,  SVP Satellite Communication

Telespazio is a long-term partner of EUMETSAT, the intergovernmental agency that manages European weather satellites and that includes 30 member countries. In addition to the new EUMETCast Europe satellite communication system, Telespazio provides the EUMETCast Africa service and works with EUMETSAT in space operations: in December 2022, the company managed the LEOP of the new MTG-I1 satellite and is already preparing to manage the LEOP of the EUMETSAT satellites scheduled for launch in the coming years.

Towards the Digital Twin of Italian Soil

Leonardo, through e-GEOS, a company owned by the Italian Space Agency (20%) and Telespazio (80%), will support the Department for Sustainable Development (DiSS) of the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) in the development of a Digital Twin of the Italian territory. The initiative falls under PNRR investment M2C4 I.1.1, which focuses on the development of an advanced monitoring and forecasting system. This high-resolution digital model of the terrain, built using airborne laser surveys (LiDAR) and aerogravimetric data, will serve as a strategic asset for understanding the morphology of the land and will lay the foundation for future Digital Twins capable of simulating and further studying its behaviour.
