The Coliseum Archaeological Park connects with the public thanks to a new WiFi network realised by Telespazio

Rome  05 August 2019

The Coliseum Archaeological Park is now accessible to all users through the Web for free thanks to the installation of four Hot Spots positioned near the approaches to the main monuments: at the Arch of Titus, in Largo della Salara Vecchia, at the Palatine museum and at the Coliseum, where they are locate near the bookshop and along the whole bowl of the second order.

The technological infrastructure has been realised by Telespazio with Noixa as a supporting partner, and is now operational after a test period started in 2018. The system is based on a low latency satellite communication infrastructure, including a 5 GHz wireless backbone and with hotspot areas for WiFi distribution with a capacity equal to 300 MBit per second.

The goal of this service is to provide widespread Web cover for the Coliseum Archaeological Park through a non-invasive network as well as creating an IoT (Internet of Things) network capable of providing connectivity services to tourists and to Park administration personnel, who will be able to provide information contents by means of a dedicated app.

“At last, the over 7 million tourists coming from all over the world can interact with our cultural heritage, with our social networks and digital services free of charge. It is a great achievement for the whole Archaeological Park, which can thus increase the potentialities to enjoying for citizens and visitors alike as well as improving the operational procedures of its own structure” – affirms Alfonsina Russo, the Director of the Coliseum Archaeological Park – who continues “we are working with passion to the physical, cognitive, economical, cultural and social accessibility; today, through digital accessibility, we are making an additional step forward in a perspective of innovation, participation and sharing”.

“We are very proud of this collaboration with the Coliseum Archaeological Park, which allowed Telespazio to put its satellite technology at the disposal of the visitors of one of the most important historical and cultural sites in the world – declared Alessandro Caranci, manager of the Satellite Communications Business Line of Telespazio –. From over 50 years Telespazio is an operator very attentive to new market needs and provides services dedicate to an increasingly larger public”.
