Telespazio is to take part in the
conference, The
Ambitions of Europe in Space,
in Brussels on 15-16 October. The conference
is promoted by the European Union in
collaboration with the European Commission,
the European Space Agency (ESA), the
European Investment Bank and some of
the major European industrial groups,
including Finmeccanica.
The conference, which will open with
a speech by the president of the European
Union, José Manuel Barroso,
will discuss progress on the major European
space programmes: Galileo/EGNOS
in the field of satellite navigation,
and GMES in global
monitoring of the environment and security.
The conference aims to raise the awareness of institutions and companies on the technological, industrial, economic and social significance that such programmes could potentially have in the near future. The programme of events at the two-day conference will explain the applications and services to be offered by Galileo and GMES that will benefit public authorities, companies and the general public. The methods of funding required to develop these applications will also be discussed.
Telespazio is Finmeccanica’s key operator
in satellite navigation and localisation
services. At its Fucino centre Telespazio
is completing the construction of one
of the Control Centres that will manage
the 30 satellites of GALILEO
constellation. In addition, the company
supplied the launch services and is
currently involved in the operational
management of the GIOVE-B mission, developed
by ESA for in-orbit validation (IOV)
of the technological solutions that
will be used on board the Galileo satellites.
Telespazio will supply the in-orbit
operational and integrated logistics
services for the IOV phase of the Galileo
programme, which will see the launch
of the first four operational satellites
of the constellation.
With regard to the European Geostationary
Overlay Navigation System (EGNOS),
Galileo’s precursor, which integrates
and improves the performance of navigation
systems already in existence, Telespazio
is involved in the development and testing
of innovative services and applications
Through the subsidiary e-GEOS (80% Telespazio,
20% Italian Space Agency), Telespazio
carries out all Earth Observation
commercial activities: from acquiring
and processing satellite data, to the
development and sale of software and
products. Telespazio’s services are
mainly directed towards agencies and
companies performing land use control
studies, civil protection, disaster
management, cartography, agricultural
applications and geomarketing.
In particular, Telespazio is participating
as main player in the development of
the entire ground segment of the Italian
Space Agency and Ministry of Defence
COSMO-SkyMed programme, based on a constellation
of four radar satellites. The COSMO-SkyMed
data is commercialized worldwide
by e-GEOS.
The new application services will be
a major part of the Global Monitoring
for Environment and Security (GMES)
programme launched by the European Commission
and the European Space Agency. Within
GMES, Telespazio co-ordinates the European
Maritime Security Services (MARISS),
Land and Sea Monitoring for Environment
and Security (LIMES) and G-MOSAIC programmes.
