From the base in Vandenberg, California, the first of the four COSMO-SkyMed satellites was successfully
launched yesterday at 7:35 p.m. local time (4:35 a.m. in Italy). COSMO-SkyMed is an Italian dual-use
Earth observation satellite system commissioned by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Ministry of
Defence and built by Thales Alenia Space Italia (prime contractor) and Telespazio, responsible for the
civil and military ground segments.
The satellite separated properly from the rocket 58 minutes after launch and was picked up at 5:43 a.m.,
Italian time, by Telespazio's Space Centre in Fucino.

The COSMO-SkyMed system is a constellation of four radar satellites for Earth observation for dual
(civil and military) use. Its purpose is to monitor the globe for the sake of emergency prevention (
management of environmental risks), strategy (defence and national security), and scientific and
commercial purposes, providing an assessment of various situations on a global scale.
COSMO-SkyMed is at the forefront of global technology and uses high-resolution radar to observe
the Earth day or night, regardless of weather conditions.
The three satellites needed to complete the constellation will be launched by the end of 2009.
