COSMO-SkyMed, one of the most innovative Earth Observation programmes,
is financed by the Ministry for Education,
Universities and Scientific Research, the Italian Space Agency (ASI)
and the Ministry of Defence.
The programme involves the launch of a constellation
of four satellites, equipped with radar sensors
that can operate under any weather conditions and with very short revisiting times.
COSMO-SkyMed was conceived as a dual use
programme intended to meet both civil and
defence objectives. The application services
that can be derived from COSMO-SkyMed will
contribute significantly to the defence
of the territory in areas such as fire,
landslides, droughts, floods, pollution,
earthquakes and subsidence, management of
natural resources in agriculture and forestry,
as well as monitoring of urban sprawl.

The most significant contribution of Telespazio
to the development of COSMO-SkyMed is the
control centre for the constellation, installed
at the Fucino
Space Centre, while the Matera
Space Centre is responsible
for acquiring, processing and distributing
the data gathered by the satellites for
civil applications.
With its participation in this programme, Telespazio
will extend its range of innovative applications,
able to integrate radar and high-resolution optical
data such as operational monitoring services and integrated
IT services, based on a geodatabase and accessible via the internet.
The first satellite of the constellation
was launched on 7th June 2007, the second
on 8th December 2007 and the third on 24th
October 2008. The three satellites were
launched from the Vandenberg Air Force base
in California, on board a Boeing Delta II
launchers.
